2015

In 2015 Cornwall will once again take part in the Shinty Shop Challenge Cup. The SSCC will once again return to Coombe Dingle Sports Complex, Bristol. There will also be a return to a three team format for the second time with Oxford entering the frame. This will be the forth annual competion.

2014

After a terrible winter in terms of weather that cut Cornwall off by rail from the rest of the country Cornwall Shinty still turned up at the SSCC. This year the format was just a two team format with Cornwall attempting to gain revenge from the previous year against London who won by goal difference.. However it was not to be with Cornwall suffering a heavy defeat to London. The final score was:

London 12 : Cornwall 1

London: Colin Irving (00.10, 12) Matt Casey (4,14, 17, 20, 27, 36, 38, 56, 56) Graham Love 66

Cornwall: Matt Mossop 32

2013

2013 was the year for a number of firsts for the Shinty Shop Challenge Cup. This was the first year the event was held at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex in Bristol.  For the first time ever the tournment expanded to include three teams: Bristol, Cornwall and London. With the two favourties Cornwall and London drawing against each other it was down to their results against Bristol. London came out on top by beating Bristol with the most goals having scored 9 against them and Cornwall 7. Bristol did not find the net at all.

2012

To celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s birthday, Cornwall Shinty Club would like to invite you to the inaugural Shinty Shop Challenge Cup, 2pm, Saturday 21st April on Flax Bourton Village Green where the Duchy of Cornwall will play London in what is possibly the first recorded match between the two sides and the first competitive fixture for the Duchy in about 80 years, marking the start of renewed efforts to revive the sport south of the border.

Cornwall Shinty Club Chairman, Matt Mossop, in speaking of the event said, “The last time the Cornish crossed the Tamar wasn’t so pretty, and whilst we’re a couple shy of 15,000 strong and a bit new to the raising of caman, An Goff will surely be on the bus and we’re reasonably sure London aren’t quite up to full strength either. A lot of water has flowed through the Tamar and Thames in the last 500 years and with George I watching our last international, we’re rather hoping the Duke of Cornwall may be with us on this occasion. Whether the Londoner’s will have to retreat to the Tower again waits to be seen.”

“Most people will not know that shinty was one of the most popular games in Cornwall until the 1920’s when it almost died out…they were once the champions of the sport.”

Archaeologist Matt Mossop is no stranger to trying to lure the royals out to play, having studied at St Andrews University. Cornwall Shinty Club is delighted to be working with Mabe Youth Community Project, Unique Ecofuels as well as Archaeological Consultancy Ltd, Mabe Post Office, Sharp’s Doom Bar and the New Inn, for whose support the Club is hugely grateful.

London Camanachd has had a far more consistent history in recent years with the current revival headed by Graham Love. The club was formed in 1894, being an amalgamation of London Northern Counties and London Scots. After a long period in abeyance it was reformed in 1982. The highlight of the club’s history was the 1984 appearance in the quarter final of Shinty’s most prestigious trophy, the Camanachd Cup. Subsequent revivals of the club have seen them win six-a-side trophies, and compete in South region cup competitions. “We’re delighted to be taking part in a piece of shinty history this weekend, and wish to thank Atkins for their generous provision of our match jerseys.”

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the ShintyShop.com for sponsoring the event and Flax Bourton and the Dew Drop Inn for their support. Russell Fraser the Managing Director of ShintyShop.com said, “DCR Sports & Shinty Shop are delighted to be supporting the fostering of shinty and wish Cornwall Shinty Club every success in the future development of the sport South of the border. The Shinty Shop Challenge Cup will hopefully lead to greater development of shinty in new areas for the sport. Shinty Shop are committed to offering the highest possible customer service providing everything from branded team wear, leisure wear and equipment to clubs and players from all corners of the world.”
